About Western Marine Shipyard Ltd.
Western Marine Shipyard Ltd., Bangladesh’s leading shipbuilder, was established in the year 2000 in Chattogram. Its mother company, Western Marine Services Ltd., was formed by a group of marine professionals specialized in ship-repair and export of marine supplies. The major intention of the company’s founders was to develop a cluster of technological excellence to meet the global demand of the maritime industry. Initially, the company developed as a shipbuilder with its own shipyard in the eastern bank of the Karnaphuli river, in Chattogram, in the year 2000, over a land of 1.5 acres for building inland vessels and barges. Since then, the company gradually attained prominence as a major shipbuilding company with quality based motivation.
Today Western Marine Shipyard is the leading shipbuilder in the country, standing over 45 acres of land, modernized into a world-class shipyard consisting of all sort of hi-tech & heavy tech machinery through an investment of Tk.300 crore. It is an employment source for 3500 people including skilled and semi-skilled laborers. More than five hundred professionals are working in the shipyard as well, including marine experts, mechanical experts, electrical engineers, naval architects & experts in other fields. The yard gained recognition so rapidly, that its fame spread all over the world in a very short period. As a result, today, the shipyard is constructing an array of ocean-going vessels for Germany, Denmark, Tanzania, New Zealand, Kenya, the UAE, Norway, India, Equador, and many more.
The Shipyard has achieved a remarkable amount of international orders of shipbuilding in recent years; some of which are: 8 multi-purpose cargo vessels for Grona Shipping in Germany, 5 ice-class container vessels for Stella Shipping in Denmark, a floating reception vessel for LAMOR Corporation AB in Finland, 2 Passenger Vessels for Karachi Port Trust (KPT) of Pakistan, a car ferry for Hundested-Rørvig Færgefart in Denmark, a multi-purpose cargo vessel for Equador, and a offshore patrol vessel for the Kenyan government, amongst many more orders. The yards’ international standard and recognition has led it to be a leader amongst shipbuilders in the region, and the ability to complete with shipyards globally.
Western Marine Shipyard has received two certificates from Bureau Veritas (BV): OHSAS 18000 for health & safety & ISO 14000 for the environment. Additionally, we have received an ISO 9001 certificate from Germanischer Lloyd (GL) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for quality. This has made us the only Integrated Management System (IMS) certified company in Bangladesh, enhancing our capacity and capability to serve foreign buyers and clients. In addition to that, the Western Marine Shipyard has also received the World Maritime Day Award for extraordinary performance in high-tech industries, the HSBC Export Excellence Award, as well as the Gold National Export Trophy from the Bangladesh government for extraordinary contribution to the export sector in the country.
The yard has built more than 150 ships and are now building more than 39 ships, which are in progress; some of which includes: deep-sea fishing trawlers, port utility vessels, tugs, container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and passenger ships.

At Western Marine Shipyard we have 500 professional staff, 3000 skilled and semi-skilled labors to ensure world-class shipbuilding standards. We also have a modern ship design section using internationally reputed software, experts, certifications and experienced naval architects who are constantly fulfilling the needs of ship design parameters. We provide in-house and foreign training to our staffs to enable them to upgrade their skills constantly and frequently.
Abundance of land
Currently, at Western Marine Shipyard, we have three ship-building yards, totaling 45 acres of land. We are always intent on acquiring new land and expanding our yard so a larger number of orders can be constructed simultaneously.
Modern machinery
A wide range of machinery and equipment such as CNC machines, bending and blasting machines, etc. are available at the shipyard, which is constantly reviewed by professionals and experts for maintenance and possible ways of improvement.
